About
From the Bushveld to the Bicycles – My Journey from South Africa to Amsterdam
Hi, I’m Jonathan and I’m not a professional photographer.
At least, not in the formal sense.
I live in Amsterdam, where I work in tech by day — surrounded by code, creativity, and the occasional stroopwafel. But I was born and raised in South Africa, where my love for wildlife and wild spaces was woven into the fabric of everyday life.
Growing up with the bush, just a road trip away, I learned early on that there’s nothing quite like sitting quietly in the back of a Land Rover, eyes scanning the horizon for a flicker of movement. Whether it was the thunderous presence of an elephant, the stealth of a leopard or the mischievous glance of a cheetah cub, these encounters never felt ordinary — they felt magical. Somewhere along the way, I started trying to capture those moments through my camera lens.
Photography became my way of remembering — of holding on to the raw beauty of home, even as life carried me thousands of kilometers north.
Now, living in the heart of Europe, I still travel back to Southern Africa whenever I can. Every trip into the bush is a reunion — with nature, with my roots and with the part of myself that finds peace in golden grasslands and distant lion calls. When I photograph wildlife, I’m not chasing the perfect shot, I’m sharing a feeling. A memory. A moment that stopped me in my tracks.
This little store is my way of bringing those stories to you. Whether it’s a playful elephant calf bounding through the morning light or the soul-deep stare of a lion at dusk, every image in my collection holds a piece of the wild — and of my heart.
Thanks for stopping by. I hope these prints bring a little bit of Africa’s magic into your world too.
